The Firm’s reputation as a leading international law firm may be significantly attributed to its long-standing, preeminent position in Latin American practice. The Firm’s Latin American practice group, which is one of the largest and most experienced of any international firm, has broad corporate and litigation experience in both inbound and outbound work relating to complex transnational matters in Latin America.
For over 35 years, the Firm has been present in Mexico City and, in 1991, it became one of the first American law firms to establish a branch office in Mexico. The Firm also works closely with correspondent attorneys throughout Latin America. Today, lawyers who have been trained in the Firm’s New York office practice throughout Latin America, including in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico and Peru.
Most members of the practice group are at least bilingual and routinely negotiate and draft agreements in Spanish and Portuguese. Various attorneys have civil law degrees from Latin American jurisdictions, placing the Firm in a unique position among U.S. and European law firms. This capability is buttressed by the most complete Latin American law library of any U.S. firm. The Martindale-Hubbell International Law Digest, one of the most widely used legal resources in the world of research on the laws of more than 80 countries, has turned to the Firm since 1930 to prepare and annually update the laws of almost every Latin American jurisdiction.
