Curtis is committed to the belief that the practice of law presents unique opportunities to serve the local, national and international community. To that end, the Firm is actively engaged in pro bono service, at all levels of the Firm, in all of its offices, and across all of its practice groups. The Firm’s pro bono program serves a wide array of individuals in need, public service organizations and not-for-profit entities.
Curtis places special emphasis on pro bono activities that draw on the Firm’s strength in the international arena. For example, Curtis lawyers have prosecuted claims for political asylum seekers from all corners of the globe, and have done human rights field work in North Africa and the Sudan. Several of the Firm’s partners in Mexico served as the founding members of Comisión Mexicana de Derechos Humanos (Mexican Commission for Human Rights), one of the oldest institutions of its kind in Mexico. Through UNETE (Entrepreneurial Union for Technology in Education), Curtis has also partnered with major Mexican corporations to raise funds and procure computer technology for the Mexican public schools.
For many of its pro bono engagements, Curtis draws upon its long-standing affiliations with several volunteer-driven legal services organizations: Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund, Human Rights First, Sanctuary for Families, Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts, and the Legal Aid Society, among others.
The pro bono program at Curtis receives the full support of the Firm and all service departments of the Firm are placed at the program’s disposal. Every pro bono engagement has the direct participation and supervision of a partner. Associates receive billable hour credit for the time they spend on pro bono representation.
