In addition to domestic J.D. students, Curtis, Mallet-Prevost, Colt & Mosle LLP actively recruits international LL.M. students to participate in its program for foreign associates.
Foreign associates with LL.M. degrees are normally hired for that period of time ending with the expiration of their respective practical training immigration authorizations. They are selected on the basis of academic performance, employment experience, language ability, licensing in foreign jurisdictions and expertise in areas of law relevant to the Firm’s practice. Foreign associates also come to us from branch offices or through established relationships with law firms, companies and governmental entities. The individual foreign associates are responsible for employing with the applicable visa requirements.
In most cases, foreign associates join the Corporate International Department. Our goal is to integrate foreign associates into transactions and matters which permit them to gain useful training, as well as to make use of their particular skills. We have had success in achieving those goals in the past and continue to seek outstanding foreign lawyers to work in the international practice.
Foreign associates are subject to the requirements generally applicable to all associates. Their performance reviews are conducted in conjunction with overall associate reviews undertaken by the Personnel Committee. The status of each foreign associate is evaluated individually during the course of employment. In most cases, foreign associates conclude their employment at the end of the originally scheduled period, but we do consider extension of employment for additional periods or hiring the foreign associate on a long-term basis, with assignment to an appropriate class.
